Soteria's Current Kitchen

LG 46 SOTERIA PROJECT

Mission & Goal

Our project team has been tasked with renovating the kitchen and dining space at the Soteria House residence where 16 men currently live. The one range to cook on in a small galley kitchen just doesn’t cut it.

Our team has determined a full kitchen renovation is needed, and we need to raise $50,000 to complete the renovation May 2020.

As a team, we will create a space that gives these men the opportunities to build relationships with one another through fellowship and shared experiences.

Each member of our 20-person team has already donated to this project. Now we are asking our community — our family and friends — to help us reach our goal.

Jerry Blassingame founded Soteria 1999 as a prison ministry, transitional housing provider, and mentorship program for men and women released from prison. Jerry had once been incarcerated, so he understood the challenges facing those leaving prison. That understanding led Jerry to found Soteria to help them re-enter society by teaching them life skills, helping them rebuild themselves, and providing a way for them to give back to their community. At their core, Jerry and Soteria are committed to ensuring men have the confidence, skills, and opportunities to avoid returning to prison. Soteria’s approach has proven extraordinarily successful: the average recidivism rate in South Carolina is 31.8%; but Soteria’s rate is 4%. Over the last 20 years, Soteria has positively impacted the lives of over 5,000 previously incarcerated individuals.

"People look at us and say we will never change.

But given the right opportunities, we can."

Who is Fred Turner?

Team Member from Kitchen Sync shares his Soteria Story

Fred is is a resident at Soteria and works at Kitchen Sync on Laurens Road. He wanted to make changes in his life in order to be successful but has never expected a handout.

Soteria has given Fred the tools needed to lead a better life and he has taken this opportunity to further himself. Starting out as a dishwasher with no work experience, Fred quickly moved up to the prepping area where he expertly preps raw ingredients for the the Kitchen Sync team.
